LETS DANCE!The time is 8pm, the date is the 14th December, the place is the John Boste hall on Gillinggate, it is,the fabulous and marvellous, LETS Dance & Music Night!! With great musicians lined up to play, hopefully a Ceilidh band as well, and its open to members from other local LETS groups, it promises to be a fine night. Bridie is on the case and sorting out the exact details as we go to press. Rather than the traditional T&T the steering group decided to go with a more lively and exciting event. JB Hall has a bar and is a good venue for a boogie. There will be a small charge on the door. Any queries, please call 026. A Great Exhibition!Never mind the dodgy dome down in Greenwich, if you want a really good exhibition you should have been in Kendal Town Hall in July because the LETS Art, Crafts and Health event was a roaring success! Twenty members exhibited or did demonstrations and the quality of work was astoundingly impressive. Tim Collins MP and the press attended, and from their response they were very interested and impressed too. We got newspaper coverage not only for the Exhibition but the Lets scheme in general. Many thanks to the 20+ members who helped make it all possible, from planning and advertising to hard physical labour - especially those who weren't even exhibiting. There was a constant stream of visitors all weekend and particularly busy on Saturday morning when it wasn't raining! Judging by the notes early visitors were taking hopefully there has been or will be some follow up sales for members. 18 membership forms were taken away and numerous copies of the new stylish, full-colour Lets leaflet. We werenÕt able to do a precise count of those attending but some Lets members who don't usually attend events were interested enough to come along, so something new and different was provided. The Exhibition is just the beginning of a kind of 'relaunch/survival' project for Kendal Lets. 112 was the driving force behind the Exhibition and is currently bringing fresh enthusiasm and ideas to several projects. Congratulations and thanks to 112 for putting the Exhibition together - a really great job. Psst.. have you seen the new Lets Leaflet?!Kendal Lets now have a Display and presentation of photos, quotes, newspaper articles and the all new, full-colour leaflet! Many thanks to those members who allowed themselves to be photoed and quoted, and to Pete Smith for the photography. This should be built on - so if you have any interesting photos, stories or whatever about your Lets activities or anything to help promote Lets to the wider community, please send it into 112. Steve can also provide copies of any of your photos. The new leaflet looks really good and has received favourable comments from all who've seen it. The steering group members have copies and would be very happy to let you have some for spreading the word. Thanks to the Kendal & District Neighbourhood Forum for the money to finance the exhibition and the leaflet. We want to use the leaflet and the display to promote the Lets scheme to a wider audience and we will need your help and ideas to do it! See over for more info. It's that subs time of year again!Pauline says "The 1Kent a month, or 12K for the year, is debited directly from your account. Or, you can pay in cash by letting me know by the end of November at the latest. There should be a rebate again this year from the Kents earned by the photocopier, so expect it to be less than 12K." LETS Rock! with £2000The Northern Rock Foundation have come up trumps and awarded Kendal Lets a grant towards our running costs and some promotional work, of £1000 per year for the next two years. This is great news as it solves our immediate cash flow problem in producing newsletters and directories. It will also allow us to develop a more secure base for funding, help spread the word in the community and produce some high quality events. Obviously, continually applying for sterling grants is not really what an alternative currency is about, although we do face unavoidable sterling costs. At present we don't charge an annual sterling subscription which is a good thing, however, it means that we do need to produce various ways of raising funds. The photocopier is producing a small surplus of cash and a large one of Kents and this is helping. Some members have also paid off their Kents balances and/or their annual subs in cash - thanks. For now, we have a breathing space and extra resources to develop the sustainability of the scheme. It is up to all members to contribute their ideas and help spread the word, as well as supporting fundraising events. Hopefully, some members will be inspired by the Exhibition in July and realise that an ordinary Tea & Trade could be just as exciting if they prepared a presentation of work, a display of information or performed demonstrations or taster sessions. We need to hear your ideas and suggestions for the scheme and for socials and other sorts of events. The steering group want to make the scheme meet your needs but its hard to do if you don't pipe up! What's also needed now is for members to do some networking and legwork - think of organisations, small groups or businesses, community centres etc. and make suggestions or best of all, go talk to them yourself (armed with the new leaflet!) and get them to join the scheme. The money from Northern Rock means we have a short time to expand and develop the scheme, making it a thriving and sustainable entity and of even greater benefit to the local community and all its members. The steering group will be looking for lots of help to do this and may phone you up if you're offering a useful skill. However, don't feel you have to wait to be asked! Especially if you need to earn Kents, there's now plenty of jobs to be done! Do get in touch with 112 or any of the steering group. Let us know what you'd do! Next steering group meeting is Tues 20th Nov, 8pm. Either let one of the steering group know your ideas or come along and join in, you'd be most welcome. |
